Chinese-Canadian Community completes $5 million campaign
Chinese-Canadian Community Celebrates 20 Years of Support for BC Children’s Hospital
January 25, 2015 – Vancouver, BC – BC’s Chinese-Canadian community continued its long tradition of giving to BC Children’s Hospital by raising $668,669 at the 20th annual For Children We Care gala at the Vancouver Convention Centre January 24. Funds raised will be used to purchase two ultrasound machines for the hospital’s Radiology Department.
Guests also celebrated the successful completion of the community’s Operation Superhero campaign, which raised $5 million to support the construction of the Teck Acute Care Centre, the heart of the new BC Children’s Hospital. BC Children’s Hospital Foundation’s board chair, David Podmore, announced to the 700 guests in attendance that the oncology inpatient unit in the Teck Acute Care Centre, to open in 2017, will be named the For Children We Care Oncology Inpatient Unit in recognition of the Chinese community’s contributions.
“In the past 20 years the Chinese-Canadian community has raised close to $14 million to BC Children’s Hospital through the For Children We Care gala,” said Teri Nicholas, president and CEO of BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. “We are privileged to celebrate this community’s generosity and are thrilled to be able to incorporate the For Children We Care name in such a prominent area of the new hospital.”
Guests were invited to go on an “enchanted journey” at the gala venue. A memory lane filled with historical photos that highlight the Chinese community’s achievements was created for the evening, and videos showed the impact of the community’s fundraising efforts, including the importance of ultrasound machines for BC Children’s Hospital patients.
“The new ultrasound machines will replace ones that have been in use for more than 10 years,” said Angel Chan, chair of the 2015 For Children We Care organizing committee. “We are proud to give BC’s children this much-needed equipment. The new machines will produce much higher-quality and clearer images, and will help caregivers figure out exactly what is wrong with a child and determine the appropriate treatment.”
The For Children We Care gala is organized by BC Children’s Hospital Foundation and members of the Chinese-Canadian community. Guests get together every year at this black-tie event for a night of fine dining, live entertainment and a silent auction, all in support of BC Children’s Hospital. The event is the largest fundraising gala in the Chinese community. Over the past 20 years, the gala has raised funds for the purchase of medical equipment, childhood disease research, and educational programs at BC Children’s Hospital.
